High-carbon ferrochrome is mainly used in stainless steel production, in which 200 series stainless steel contains about 16% chromium, 300 series stainless steel contains about 25% chromium, and 400 series stainless steel contains about 14% chromium. The 300 series stainless steel with the largest demand for ferrochrome is also the largest proportion of stainless steel production.
Used as an alloying agent for ball steel, tool steel and high-speed steel with high carbon content, which improves the hardenability of steel and increases the wear resistance and hardness of steel. It is used as an additive for cast iron to improve the wear resistance and hardness of cast iron. Ferrochrome is classified into high carbon ferrochrome according to different carbon content, including loading grade ferrochrome (C≦10%), medium carbon ferrochrome (C≦4.0%), low carbon ferrochrome (C≦0.5%), microcarbon Ferrochrome (C≦0.15%), etc. Commonly used are silicon chromium alloys, chromium nitride and the like. Ferrochromium is mainly used as an alloying additive for steelmaking, and was added in the later stages of refining of steelmaking. In the smelting of low-carbon steel such as stainless steel, low-carbon and micro-carbon ferrochrome must be used, so the production of refined ferrochrome has once been developed on a large scale. Due to the improvement of the steelmaking process, when producing steel such as stainless steel by the AOD method (see refining outside the furnace), the carbon ferrochrome (mainly the charging grade ferrochrome) is used for the furnace, so it is only necessary to increase the temperature in the later stage. Micro-carbon ferrochrome is used to adjust the composition, so now the focus of ferrochrome production is to refine carbon ferrochrome.
